Here is a new tutorial of how to backup WordPress database with the help of convenient plugin called WP-DB-Backup. The main advantage of it is ability to send e-mailed backups automatically. So you can store the backups locally and on your mail server.
This manual is compatible with WordPress 3.0
1. First you need to install WP-DB-Backup designed by Austin Matzko.
2. Put the cursor at ‘Tools’ so that an arrow appears:

3. Click on the appeared arrow.
4. Select ‘Backup’.
5. The multiple choices like this will appear:

The left part contains usual set of WordPress databases that are included in every backup. Here you can only exclude comments and revisions database from the backup set if you wish. Both these databases are recommended (but it is not required) to be excluded.
The right list contains additional tables of database that are usually created by different plugins. If you think that the data created by your plugins should be backed up, just not to be lost or broken, select these tables too.
6. In the Backup Option coming next after tables choice you will see three alternative points:
A. Save to the server
If select this, your database backup will be saved on a web server. This is not recommended place of storing the backups.
B. Download to your computer.
Backup file can be saved locally on your PC.
C. Email backup to:
The database backup copy will be sent to an e-mail address you will specify here.
7. As an example lets save a backup copy on your computer.
After checking the tables press “Backup now!”
The progress bar will reflect the process of creating a backup. After it iscompleted, the browser will ask you where to save the copy. Set the place you need.
8. You will also find “Scheduled Backup” item. This is my favorite part of the program.
Here you can set a schedule for automatic sending the backups to specific e-mail address – as often as you want. “Once Daily” mode is recommended.
9. In the right part check the additional tables you need to back up every time.

10. Specify the e-mail address in the “Email backup to:” field.
11. Press “Schedule backup.”
12. If everything is correct, you will receive e-mails with database backup attached every day. You can resave them on PC, store at the mail server or elsewhere you like. Remember about the risk of your mailbox to be hacked and all backups can become available for others.
Thanks and good luck
