Matt Mullenweg, the founding developer of the CMS we all love, has announced that further development on WordPress will be halted. This statement originated from Matts blog (ma.tt) early on March 31st. Here is an excerpt from that post:
...We will continue development on the current sub version of WordPress, which is 2.7.2, as well as continually update with any necessary security patches in the future. We will not, however, be releasing a 2.8 version of WordPress, meaning there will be no more "big updates" to the blogging software. I know many will be disappointed by this, but I feel after much deliberation between me and my co-workers that this is the best move to move the company ahead...
Personally, I myself can't believe it. I've always seen WordPress as becoming something really big in the future. I think it's even liable to say that WordPress had the potential to become a paid product, where users would have to pay to use the CMS. With such a great and expanding community, I'm somewhat disappointed in Matt for almost completely abandoning it.
Though, when I think about it, the other half of me thinks it's a good move on his part. I mean, he is only 25 years old and he's already a very successful online entrepreneur. Besides developing WordPress, Matt is also the founder of the online company Automattic. He has a great future ahead of him full of tons of different possibilities.
Ah, I guess what I'm trying to say is that even though I'm somewhat saddened at the fact that WordPress will forever stay at version 2.7, I'm also wishing Matt luck on his future jobs and projects. He really did a great thing with WordPress, and I thank him for it.
So what do you guys think? How long did it take you to realize this was an April Fool's joke? Don't lie, now.
