Hey there guys.

Today’s post is a bit of an odd n’.  What I’ll be doing, basically, is post here and there every month on news about one of the small niche sites I’m developing. Now, I’m “new” to this whole business, so it should be fun to see how it ends up.

To be honest, I’m not sure what I’m going to do with these sites.  I may build them up and then sell them on SitePoint.com or something, or if they’re doing good enough and make me over $100 a month, I’ll keep ‘em.  We’ll just play it by ear for now.

One of the sites I’ll be developing is FidoTraining.com.  Yeah, I thought the domain name was freakin’ awesome too.  It’s going to be a site about, you guessed it, dog training.  I have a load of pre-written articles here on the subject, and my plan is to update the site with them every now and then.  Once I start getting some backlinks and a good amount of the site is indexed by Google, I’ll start to monetize it with something.  Not entirely sure yet.  I’m somewhat limited, as I only want to be paid via PayPal.  (If you have any suggestions, go ahead and let ‘em rip).

I was thinking Kontera and Bidvertiser, and once the site gets a PageRank 1 (2?), I’ll throw in Text-Link-Ads or something similar.

I’ll be following the guide that Jim Karter put up on his site, where he is doing his own case study on one of the niche sites he put together about chemotherapy.  You can see his latest update here.

The site is already making him about $70 a month and he’s only put in about a day’s worth of work, maybe, over the four-month period.  His end goal is to be making $1000 a month from that site alone, so we’ll see how it ends up.

Anyway, lets get some stats on my site here.  (You’ll notice that as of right now, all you’ll see on the site is a link to wikipedia’s page on “Dog Training.”  This helps Google categorize the site.)

Website Case Study

Site : http://FidoTraining.com
End Goal : Make $100/Month After 6 Months
Total Time : 2 Days
Money Spent : $6 (Domain Name)
Money Earned : $0 (Not yet monetized)
Backlinks : ~5
Pages Indexed by Google : 0
Unique Visits : 0

I may have a “head start” from what Jim started with, since a Google search for “chemotherapy” returns 21,100,000 results, while a search for “dog training” returns 12,000,000. It’s still a crapload of competition, but since it’s significantly smaller that 21 million, I feel good.

Remember, I have a few other sites like this, except they’re all on different low-profile subjects - one of them returning only 3,080 hits in Google.

Anyway, go ahead and wish me luck, and give me tips while you’re at it if you’ve done this kind of stuff before.

This post is really for all the website designers that read this blog.  I’m sure you’ve heard of at least 2 if not all of these sites.  They’re almost like a necessity to have bookmarked if you call yourself a web designer.

Check ‘em out.

SmashingMagazine.com

http://smashingmagazine.com

SmashingMagazine.com is just freakin’ amazing.  The amount of content that they spew out almost daily is just amazing.  Every week they give out a wordpress theme of the highest quality.  Nevermind that, every day they provide designers with tips, tricks, recommendations, and more importantly, inspiration.  The contests held here alone are enough to make you come back every day.  Just the other week, they gave out a grand prize of a Macbook Air as well as a dozen other smaller things.  If you are a web designer, this is the site for you.  Can over 100,000 RSS subscribers be wrong?

DezinerFolio.com

http://dezinerfolio.com

If these lazy asses would get up and update their site more, DezinerFolio would be able to rival SmashingMagazine.  They give out great freebies, like Smashing, that usually include a bunch of .psd files for free use.  When they do update, which is like 3 or 4 times a month, it is usually with great content, such as a tutorial or great free downloads.  This is another site worth having bookmarked.

HackWordpress.com

http://hackwordpress.com

Alright, even though this isn’t directly related to design, it is in the ballpark.  Some web designers work with wordpress, and what better way to make your designs pop then knowing how to mold the actual CMS you’re building on?  HackWordpress gives its users great tips and tricks on how to get Wordpress to do whatever you want.  It is also a great source of Wordpress php code snippets, because face it, we all forget how to call a tag cloud and such, don’t we?

The Behemoth’s big project has finally been released today, and it’s “flying off the shelves,” for lack of a better saying.  Tom Fulp can finally take a nice deep breath and sit back.  This, what, 2+ year project for him is finally done and now he can watch as it grows to dominate xBox Live.

I’m telling ya, if I had an xBox and it was connected to xBox live, not only would I buy this, I might actually have sex with it too.  It does look like really fun gameplay with a cliche, yet interesting, storyline.  But still, that’s not what would excite me.  Just the fact that it was created totally in Flash.  Just wow.  It’s like, inspiration x’s 100 .

Alright.  You.  You have an xBox, right?  Well go buy it.  It’s only 1,200 points.  Go.  Now.

Alexa Graph

I'm going to be putting this graph here for the next week or two to see if I notice a difference in my Alexa ranking. I'm pretty sure with this graph here, the ranking should be bumped up a little.
