ForTheLose.org - Theme Released: Rock Solid

I'm glad to say that after about 1-2 weeks of on-and-off work, my free Wordpress theme Rock Solid is now available for download to the public. I have to say I am really proud with how this theme turned out. I've always wanted to do a "dark" and "concrete-style" theme, and I think I hit the nail on the head with this one. I'll get to the features in a second, I just want to take the time to thank ViciousDuck and Eternal for helping my out with the bug testing. They spotted a few things that otherwise would've gone unnoticed.

From the Theme Options page, you can do things such as:

Change the theme color style.
Enable the built-in Twitter widget.
Enable the built-in Flickr plugin.
Identify Key used for post image thumbnails.
Manage (and turn on/off) Google Adsense
Manage (and turn on/off) 125px by 125px Ads

Actually, the navigation does have a rollover effect, not very noticeable now that you mention it. Eh, it's fine. The rest of the theme makes up for it

Is there a way to make it so the posts show the full image as I have placed them without stretching? For instance on my homepage http://www.fanaticalgear.com no images show up, if I use the "image" option it makes them look horrible by stretching and moving them around. I would like if I have an image in the post to just show as the size I already have it set at like it does on other themes. What part of the template would I change to make this happen.

Hey james. To do that, try going into functions.php and finding this line:

echo '<img src="'.$custom_field.'" alt="Post Image" width="'.$width.'" height="'.$height.'" />';

Change it to:

echo '<img src="'.$custom_field.'" alt="Post Image" />';

This should work.

One more question. The images based on the code you just gave me let the full picture fit, however the white CONTENT box is obviously not set to be fluid, is there a way to make it fluid so the WHOLE picture will fit and the box will get bigger as needed. Not sure if this is possible. BTW i'm emailing you for a custom theme request for FanaticalMobile.com which hasn't launched yet.

stuff here
}

Remove this:

height:208px;

And now the boxes will grow in height.

Hey man real nice theme!! Also you made it to the big times with smashing magazine link! You should be getting lots of pretty random people checking out your site! For your next theme i think you should make a very simple one. All of your themes so far are made for wordpress blog sites. I no that's kind of your goal and your a wordpress theme designer but some people have websites with blogs on the side (like mine!) The blog is not the main part of my site so i don't use all the fancy ad on's like twitter on the blog i put it on the homepage. So a minimal but still sweet looking theme. I don't just an idea !! @Niko - I have no idea why that happens with certain installations, but MANUALLY upload functions.php to your server, don't do it via ftp That's the fix that I've seen works from the Wordpress.org forum.

One last question. Does anyone know if their is an ALL-IN-ONE-SEO-PACK conflict. When I go to for instance http://fanaticalgear.com/garmin-unleashes-nuvi-1200-and-nuvi-1300-gps-series/ there is no TITLE Tag and if you view the page source it shows the meta description and meta keywords using All-in-one but the Title tag is just outside of the WP HEAD section and is just the site name. Any suggestions.

BTW I extended the content section and increased Picture size, it works better for my tech blog

I included the ReadMe to hep with issues like this.

You don't have to use images in posts, but if you want to, make sure they are 520px x 212px or they will be
stretched. To add an image to a post, from the "Write Post" page in the dashboard, scroll down to the "Custom Fields"
area and input "image" as the key and the url to your image as the value and then save the post. (Note, if you
have been using a different key other than "image" and don't want all your past pictures to go to waste,
simply go to Rock Solids Theme Options page and change the post image keyword to the one you've
been using. Rock Solid will then retrieve all of your old pictures.

Thanks alot...it works to show the the image inthe top of single post but I was referring to the top of the site where you have rolling photos to "Featured Post". In you demo you have a chamelon at beginning....

Alright, try this.

MANUALLY (not using an ftp program, use the cPanel) upload the contents of the /js/ folder to the appropriate place on your server. That should fix it.

The folder /js/ is already in /themes/rocksolid/ directory, uploaded via FTP when I installed your theme.
Should I delete such directory now and create it manually via DirectAdmin (my hosting do not use cPanel) and then upload the JS files?
If not where to store the js directory?

Way to fail Ralph.
@Diego - Make sure you have javascript enabled and supported in your browser. Also, make sure you have the latest version of Wordpress (the earlier ones don't come with the jquery library). If that doesn't work, try deactivating all of your plugins, since they can often cause some type of problem. If that doesn't work...listen to Ralph, he occasionally gets things right.

This was one of the best themes i've everseen since 2004 where i setup my first wp-blog.
I missed the doing to work with language packs to internationalize the theme. I would translate it to german if there come the opinion to work with .po & .mo files.

First off, love you theme. Its just awesome =D.

I don't have much skills when it comes to theme building, and only have mediocre skills when it comes to edit code following a simple tutorial or a readme file.

But I had some questions about Rocksolid theme, more specific the sidebar. The sidebar is quite wide, which is nice when using widgets like "recent comments", "recent posts" etc. But when using "shorter" ones like "meta info", "category" or "archives" the widget only takes up a small part of space making. I was wondering if it is possible to make make more sidebars?

Something like:
Sidebar 1 (top) the widgets under each other
Sidebar 2 (middle) 2 widgets side by side,
Sidebar 3 (bottom) the widgets are under each other

I don't know if this made any sense tho . Anyways, was just a suggestion to an already awesome theme =D

@Creamania - It's because your not doing it right. The excerpts in wordpress strip all formatting, thats why you don't see the links, images, bolded text, etc on the index page. Just a few sentences (just the excerp).

Your also not using the Custom Fields and the key "image" to display your post images. Open up the ReadMe that was included in the theme to learn how to use Custom Fields if you don't know how to.

@Alin - Go into index.php and ctrl+f to find "the_excerpt". Replace that with "the_content". That will definitely work. If that's what you did and it didn't work, you must've deleted something you shouldn't have, like an apostrophe or parenthesis.

@Creamania - The links will not show on the index page. It's just an excerpt. Wordpress strips all formatting from excerpts. There's no way around that aside from just showing your entire posts on the front page instead of just an excerpt. As for the images and text gap, this is because your images are not the correct dimensions. To fix this, go into "style.css" and search for:

.post-image{
...
}

and REMOVE this line:

height: 208px;

Hope it works.

That can be so many things. Is the plugin activated, do you have it to display "8" "user" photos to be displaed? Did you imput your Flickr ID number? Is your output code properly formatted with:

<li> *default flickrss code here* </li>

$my_query = new WP_Query('showposts=3');

Change 3 to how many posts you want.

I use Intense Debate for my comments and noticed that when I get a trackback it is not displayed in this theme when using intense debate, if i turn off intense debate it displays the trackbacks/pingbacks. Is this a theme issue or a plugin issue?

This theme is amazing, but I have a little problem: on the homepage when I try to clic on 'Comments" of one of the articles, it doesn't work! The link is there but when I clic, nothing happens!

@Shannon- Change your permalink structure to something other than the default one. I recommend a custom one, use /%postname%/. This is addressed in the ReadMe.

The requested URL /2009/03/15/bonjour-tout-le-monde/ was not found on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

@Shannon - Thats weird, sounds like a Wordpress problem. try switching themes to see if it still happens. I really don't know what to tell you there, that hasn't happened to anyone else.

Edit - A plugin might be messing it up, too. It's a possibility.

Question:

Using the Rock Solid Options panel, I specified my own pix for three ads, called from the root directory. I left one ad default untouched. Works like a charm. But when I go to the About page (unmodified), none of the pix show up--and neither does the default pic. Any suggestions?

Hey - I LOVE this theme, and I have already been working on some customization, but I CANNOT get the pictures to show up, let along slide through on the index page. I have tried everything already suggested. I know my Java Script is running, I already deleted and reloaded the .js files (not through my ftp program), and I still cannot get it right....any ideas?

aHA! Got it--or a workaround at any rate. If I put the entire url address to the image in the Rock Solid options panel, the images show up on every page. I still don't understand why they show up on the home page (and no other page) without this, though...

@john - Another thing that causes that problem is certain plugins. I don't know why, but they mess up the jQuery for some reason. Try disabling them one by one to find the culprit.

Thanks Ralph - good news, I finally got the pictures to rotate, bad news is, it's rotating the "Default-post-image"... I have been working on the settings for the pictures, but at least it's starting to work correctly.

Thanks for the response. Strange, though: I don't have any extra plugins--I'm using Rock Solid as-is.

One other odd thing: though I specify the text size for my pages using the html tab:
I wind up with ridiculously large text when viewed in IE. (Safari is fine.) I've checked the browser text-size settings, and looked at it on different computers. Same thing.

Any thoughts?

That's weird. It probably has to do with the use of "em" 's I used in this theme. Try using lower font size numbers or even heading tags, they do the same thing, no?

Thanks. Still working on it. Someone told me the browsers are guessing at my font size "3" and so I tried "3pts" and "3em" That ALMOST fixes the SIZE problem in IE (the text is still a little too big; fewer words per line), but the delicious font (which I like a lot) still looks like crap in IE.

Any thoughts? Can this be fixed in css--and if so, what do I need to do?

@JM - Sorry, I'm not sure what color you're looking for. You can fnd it yourself though, just take a screenshot of the theme and put it in photoshop or another graphic program like it and use the eyedropper tool to select the color and you'll see the HEX value. If you don't have access to a program, comment back with a little more detail (maybe a screenshot?) Thanks.

I'm now using your default font appearance and h-tags, as you suggested. But no matter what I do, the font displays somewhat differently in different browsers. IE is the main offender. How do I alter the appearance in IE only?

Specifically, I'm looking for code that will alter the font size in IE so the h4 tag = h3 in IE only, h3 = h2 in IE only, and h2 = h1 in IE only?. Because when it looks fine elsewhere, it's now too small in IE. Thanks for the fab theme!

WoW! I was just having my morning coffee and theme browsing and stumbled upon this GOODNESS! I have been on this minimalistic trip for a while and your theme just wants me to take a small step in the other direction. Hopefully, I will find some time to set it up and give it the business. Hey!

Great theme. I was testing it out and noticed that when I click on some links in IE, the twitter feed and other sidebar widgets fall underneath the post as though it were one column. How can prevent this from happening?

@Hamid - Sorry, I really don't get what your asking. The sidebar is a transparent black image. To change it, replace black.png with another transparent color shading. Note: This will change anything that uses black.png as a background.

@Ongai - You have to add the Youtube embed code from the HTML tab of the post box, not the VISUAL tab.

Very lovely theme. It's gorgeous and was so easy to set up. (I fried my noodle trying to get Revolution and similar to work). I've been using this a few weeks now, and have just now noticed something has happened.

1.) The bottom is gone (?) No links, no widget type links, nothing at the bottom.
2.) The Twitter feed has stopped working.

It's the site my name is linked to, and would so appreciate anyone who could possibly help me out with fixing those.

I DID IT! I uploaded this beauty and it is providing me some shine! WhOa! I made a couple small changes ... the biggie was getting flickr images in posts to link back the photo page ... part of the new flickr community guidelines. Also giving your minimalistic theme the eye ... but then I have just three years of plain blog template for this ... stop pumping these things out! ... hehe. I too was a revolution user ... but this just came with everything I use out of the box.

One small thing that I just noticed while commenting on another site ... cause I tend to like to leave longer comments ... is that the comment box does not expand as you type ... so you end up doing blind typing ... which is not a problem for me, but maybe to readers. So right now ... if I was on a rock solid site ... I would not be able to read these comments. I know that this was done intentionally as you have coded to hide the overflow because of the layout of the theme. Is there a work around besides increasing the number of rows for the comment text field?

@Ralph when I have comments turned the display of the page (in IE) puts the side bar below the post and the footer where the side bar should be. As soon as I disable comments for the post it fixes itself. This is JUST on post pages not the main page.

I'd post a link to show you however I am running an adult blog with this theme and don't want to expose the URL to minors.

My initial thought was that the width of the comments div might be pushing things out of alignment. I keep testing through trial and error but I don't seem to be able to fix it. The only way at the moment is to turn comments off.

@Ralph - I've figured it out. The problem (with the side bar moving below the post and the footer appearing where the sidebar should have been) started when I started putting pictures within my post that had the same sizes as the feature image (512x200). Because of WP's default way of handling these images, the div it puts around the image, using the wp-caption tag, it was adding an extra 10px around the image - making the overall div 522px, which pushed everything out of the way.

Anyway long story short with in the media.php file I changed the following code from:

. $content . '' . $caption . '';

to:

return ''
. $content . '' . $caption . '';

this corrected the problem perfectly and means that when I put an image into my posts with a width of 512px the template stays together.

Trying to add an extra sidebar to the site. The code that you have on the functions.php is a bit different then what i am used to.

I tried the code as:

Delete this part for wordpress to add a number/s after the sidebar name at the widget menu.Other wise it will give you 2 or as many as you want with all having the name (sidebar) instead of sidebar1, sidebar2, sidebar3.

Need help installing the Rock Solid theme. I've installed the same way I installed any other them but it does not show up in my themes in wp. It loaded to my host ok. What am I missing? I cant figure out whats going on. This is only happening with the Rock Solid theme. I really want to use it, it's perfect and a really beautiful theme.

Finally figured out the loading issue. One more newbie question. I cant figure out where to input my Flickr ID. There isnt a labeled spot for it when I go into the FlickrRSS settings. How can I input my ID to get my pics to show up.

Again, excellent theme!

I've replaced the header with an image containing two pictures, left and right.
I want to link the images to different pages. I tried using mapedit to hotlink the header image, then had style-color-blue.css call up header-blue.html instead of header--blue.gif.

The result was a blank black space instead of a header.

What did I screw up?

I tried clearing the pluggins but I'm still getting the same problem where just that default image shows up.

Awesome theme! I tweaked the width of the sections a bit and have started building a photo-blog. One question - Is there a way to prevent certain posts from showing in the slider, or perhaps better, to 'opt-in' to the slider by uploading an image?

I may not always have a slider image created for a particular post or don't want it highlighted w the default image...
