Theme in the Works: miniBlog

Hey everyone. I'm proud to announce a new WordPress theme that I have baking in the oven. The official name will be miniBlog.

I'm trying to emphasize minimalism in this theme. Small and simple. Nothing too complicated or anything near what Rock Solid was like.

The theme itself won't be hard or difficult to code at all, as it'll be very simple. I am, however, looking to completely redo my Theme Options page to make it look and function alot better. This will either be really easy or really hard. I can't tell as I've never done it before, so we'll see.

One of the main selling-points of this theme will be a dynamic hue/hex color selector in the Theme Options page, where you can change things like the background color of the site as well as text and link color. Again, this can either be incredibly easy to implement or very hard. We'll see.

Best of all, the theme will of course be free to all of you, because I love you all that much. I'm hoping to have this released sometime in the middle of next week, but it really depends on if I run into any trouble with the coding. If all goes smoothly, I'll be able to stick to the schedule.

I thought it will be more simple lol. Anyway, I like the clean and light design.

Why not center the text to the left?

I mean... All the lorem ipsum (main post content). The column width seems to be small, so in some cases, "justify" text can lead to some problems with the word-spacing. This is just a suggestion, it could be interesting to test this with different texts and different alignments to see what happens. On the screenshot it is OK, but I think about uncommon uses which are difficult to predict. But maybe it will work this way

@Skype - Like I said, I'll add options to change the bg color, text color, and link color. I'm going to try to make this as easy as possible for the user, without having to go and find a HEX code (#XXXXXX) but rather using an eyedropper type tool.

I say the hex color selection is a bad idea. People are going to choose eye-rape colors, and I wouldn't be able to sleep at night, knowing that people are using terrible colors. Remember what happens when you give users too much control? I'll give you a hint... MySpace. And the theme's still not as simple as Apathy (my simple theme- under development).

@Dan: Usually WordPress users have a brain and know good from bad. They can't really be stupid since they know how to run a website. WordPress does not equal Myspace

Hey Ralph, looking great! I would really love to see social bookmarking options at the bottom of single posts. Much like this blog has. I think at the least it needs to have a retweet this post, digg this post, & delicious this post links at the bottom. I would really love if it had the style built in and we could just change the images if we wanted to. @Dan - Eh, I dunno. If people want to use eye-raping colors, let them. It's their site. More options for them just makes the theme more unique for every installation, thus increasing its value.

@Montana - Trying to keep things simple, I didn't include any of those in this theme. I might change it later, but I doubt it. Only if I find a very simple and clutter-free way to do it. Sorry. You could always add it yourself via a plugin.

On the theme options page make sure you give the ability to get rid of the widgets, and the popular post, etc because some people (like me) want it to super simple

Usually minimalistic themes have a limited color pallete, which you do. But they also usually use very few images. With all the rounded corners, images are going to be necessary. Of course you can use moz-border-radius and -webkit-border-radius, but the IE wont have rounded corners. Also, it's a bit too...complicated to be a minimalistic theme. So yeah, you didn't really hit the whole minimal thing, but it's a good design nonetheless.

Just as a point of personal interest, are you planning on using jquery for the rounded corners, or using images? I've been wondering about which is better to use. Having all those images and divs is a pain in the ass, but you also want your site to look fine even when javascript is turned off.
