As most of you have probably heard by now, production on Windows 7 (called Windows Se7en) is well underway.  Microsoft is planning the unveiling of the Operating System for sometime next year, with some release candidates before then.  I'm pretty excited over this new OS even though we all know how much of a fail Windows Vista was.  Mostly because of these points.

In particular, Microsoft is focused on improving the time it takes for Windows to start up and shut down. In addition to its own work, Microsoft has been working directly with computer makers to address all of the factors that affect system performance.

For such a minor detail, faster start up/shut down speeds are gonna be a major plus for alot of people, especially me.  I've always been annoyed at how one of the computers at my school (note: these are the most evil and slowest computers that have ever been spawned on this Earth) has a faster startup time then my computer at home.

"The focus is on making sure the things you do (today) are easier and that the things you always wanted to do are possible," Corporate Vice President Mike Nash said in an interview Monday. "There's a lot of work we've done to just make things easier and faster.

I like the new look of Windows that was introduced with the release of Vista.  It looks alot better than XP and other previous versions of the OS.  It's fine just how it is right now.  Microsoft seems to be leaning in the right direction by leaving the aesthetics alone and by focusing solely on the backend of the OS.  As long as they get things working faster and more efficiently while reducing the number of bugs that have plagued Vista since its release, Windows Se7en will be a success.

With Windows 7, Microsoft is not introducing any major changes to the Windows kernel and is keeping much of the other plumbing substantially similar to that of Vista.

Other updates that are coming along with this release are as follows:

  • New taskbar to make window navigation easier and to reduce clutter with multiple windows
  • That damn User Account Control crappy popup will be fixed up.  Windows Se7en will allow the user to determine how often the system warns them of changes.
  • Advances in touch, speech, and handwriting recognition.
  • Ribbon interface + updates on common Windows applications, such as MS Paint (now with anti-aliasing!)
  • A multi-line calculator.  What?  I felt like including this here.  Got beef?

So what do you guys think about Windows Se7en?  I'm excited for it.  I just hope to God Microsoft doesn't totally fubar everything up this time.
