The latest free and open plugin from Microsoft can be considered a great example of mutual interoperability between Windows Azure and PHP. This plugin was released by a software giant after different other offers, for example a software development tool for PHP allowing it work with the Cloud operating system. Once getting the plugin installed, users running WordPress platform will be able to use for their benefit the storage space offered by the Microsoft’s Cloud platform. As the technical evangelist for Microsoft, Jean-Christophe Cimetiere, announced, the kit was actually developed for interaction of the Windows Azure Storage Service and WordPress, enabling its users to locate any media material in the Cloud.

He explained that the plugin bridging Windows Azure Storage with WordPress enables designers using their own instance of WordPress to make use of services of the Windows Azure Storage, such as the CDN (Content Delivery Network) feature. It offers a consequential storage service for WordPress Media developed in a scale-out architecture, in which the individual servers don’t have to share a disk. Moreover, the scenario of this mechanism goes far beyond WordPress, as it could also be very attractive to any other online application which needs to load its balance across several online servers not sharing disk.

Of course, the Windows Azure Storage plugin for WordPress is available online for free download, because it’s another open source draft located in the WordPress repository. Those customers, who already know the WordPress blogging platform, should undoubtedly know how to perform a plugin installation as well, therefore being able to take an advantage of Windows Azure Storage service for WordPress without experiencing any troubles. The extension will afterwards be available in the Installed Plugins part of the admin console on WordPress platform. Certainly, users will have to get an account with Windows Azure for starting using the Microsoft’s Cloud Operating System.

Jean-Christophe Cimetiere also adds that it’s just an ordinary plugin for WordPress, designed in PHP, so it can be run on all WordPress instances, both on Windows and Linux (the latter needs to be at least version 2.8.0, while the plugin was tested up to 2.8.4). All the plugin does is using of the Windows Azure SDK for PHP to interact with Windows Azure itself.
